Fireman Visit and Shining Light!

On Wednesday we were visited by Fireman Shane. He talked to us about what things are hot and what to do if you find matches or a lighter. He also told us about stop, drop and roll, calling 911, and staying low if there is a fire. My favorite part was when I was able to try on all the uniform a fireman wears when he goes into a fire. He told us teachers that often, when kids see a fireman in their full uniform, children are scared. As I put on the clothes, he kept reminding the kids that, "Although Mrs. Woolsey looks and sounds different, it is still her!" and not to be scared. I know the kids really enjoyed his visit.

On Thursday, Jada was chosen for shining light. She is another great First Grade Leader. That day in school she worked with another kindergartners and myself in a small reading group. She was SO helpful and set a great example to the younger student. Congrats Jada!

Guided Reading Book Bags

Coming home this week will be your student's Guided Reading Book Bag. They will be coming home 2-3 times a week. The students and I will explain all about them...

Mekhi is holding his book bag. Please try to keep all the items inside the bag. They need to be sent back to the school the following day. Students will be responsible for turning them into a box in the morning next to their folders.

Inside will be a book at your student's own reading level. Jeremiah is showing us the book we practiced this week. Have your child read the story to you that evening.

Javon is showing us the mini books we made as a class that you will also find inside their bag. This mini book contains many strategies the student can use if they get stuck on a tough word.

After reading the story, you can ask the students some questions. Jordan is holding a list of comprehension questions that you can use if you get stuck for some new questions.

The students will be learning new words at their level during guided reading as well. Summer is showing us her sight word card ring. We will be adding the new words to their word rings. The new words will not be added on to their exhibition goal, but should be reviewed frequently because they are relevant to the stories they are reading throughout the trimester.

After you are done reading, asking questions, and practicing sight words please fill out the log with your child and initial the part you completed. Jamia is holing the log you will use. After it is completely filled out, I will put a new log in the bag and keep the old log on file.

We hope you enjoy your time reading with your child! Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Shining Light

Congrats Mekhi, our shining light this week! Mekhi was a true first grade leader over the past few days. He gets along so well with the children in our class and is very good at problem solving! We are proud of you!!!

First Grade Leaders

Today the kindergartners from Ms. Josephson's class came over to play a game of ABC bingo with us. I was SO impressed with our kids! Not only did they set a good example to the younger children, but they helped find letters and told their partners the sound each letter I called out made!
