Don't forget this week is Exhibition Week. Make sure you are present and on time for your child's exhibition.

Field Trip Money Due for the Toledo Zoo: Friday, June 10
$6 is due for each student. Thank you for all the volunteers. We have all 4 chaperones for the trip.

School Carnival: Friday, June 10 @5pm-7:30pm
The school carnival is after school. You can buy tickets in advance at the front desk or at the carnival. Make sure you come out. The carnival is always a blast!

Lighthouse Awards Ceremony: Tuesday, June 14 @9am in the gym
We will be celebrating all the students in the class with awards for their achievements in kindergarten. If you are able, please come out and celebrate with us!

Toledo Zoo Field Trip: Wednesday, June 15 @8:45am-3pm
Our last field trip will be to the Toledo Zoo. Students should wear comfortable clothes and shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Students and chaperones should bring a bagged lunch that can be thrown away.

Beach Day Fun

We had tons of fun today on Beach Day today! Our classroom transformed into a beach as we used beach towels instead of desks as our learning spots and listened to tropical music. We had a watermelon snack, played beach bingo, and watched Leroy and Stitch. The kids really enjoyed this special day!

Toledo Zoo Chaperones

Beach Day Reminder

Just reminding parents that tomorrow, Tuesday May 31st is Beach Day for students to turned in a completed Milestone #4. Students who did received a note from me that stated they are able to participate in the day.

Students will dress in beach/summertime day attire. They should wear things such as flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts, sun visors and sunglasses. Swimming suits are not permitted. If students wear flip-flops, please bring a change of shoes for recess and gym. Students may also bring a beach towel with them.

I will provide a snack for the students tomorrow to go with our beach theme. We will play beach bingo, read and do work on our towels, listen to tropical music, and watch Lilo and Stitch in the afternoon.

Last Week's Visit from The Grizz

The Grizz from Oakland University (My alma matter and where I am currently attending Grad School) came to visit our village as Mystery Reader! The kids enjoyed the story I read aloud for him, all about what its like to go to college at Oakland. After we asked The Grizz questions and took pictures together.

After, our class had a special visit with The Grizz! He gave us a Grizz clock to put up in our room and each student received a Grizz bag with paper, tattoos, and a pencil!

A HUGE thank you goes to my sister Emily for helping me set up the Grizz visit. She works at Oakland University in their admissions department.

(In case you're wondering- she's having a girl in July! I'm going to be an Aunt!!!)

Milestone #3 Typo

On the Milestone #3 form I sent home last week it stated the milestone was due on the Thursday the 18th. The 18th is actually a Wednesday and is NOT the correct milestone date.

Milestone #3 is due this Thursday May 12th. This is the correct date and was stated on the learning team plan forms I send home after our last exhibition week.

Because of the time issues the typo may have caused I will not send home any homework Tuesday or Wednesday night this week. Hopefully the extra time will help students prepare for their goals.

I apologize for any confusion! Please let me know if there is anything you need to help complete this milestone.

Shaving Cream and Shining Light

Jaden and Sawyer were both Shining Light this week! (The kids are making it hard for me to only choose one!) Jaden is getting along very well with his classmates and Sawyer was a very helpful leader the day we had some kindergartners with us. Great job to both of you!!!

On Thursday we wrote our buddy study words in shaving cream on our desks. The kids had lots of fun!

Planetarium Field Trip

A HUGE thank you goes to Volunteers of America and Scholastic who provided the books. Another thank you goes to the wonderful UPA High School students who partnered up with our first graders to help them choose their books. After, they read their new stories together! The kids were so excited! I hope they are enjoying their new books!

The 3rd floor will be hosting Family Math Game Night and Internet Safety Workshop on Wednesday, April 27 from 5-6:30 on the 3rd floor for he whole school. Come learn fun math games you can play with your family to help improve students' math skills while having fun at the same time. Mr. Curran will be hosting an Internet safety workshop at 5:00 in his room. Math games start at 5:30. There will be a giveaway of numerous math games and flashcards at 6:30. You must be present to win. Snacks and drinks will be provided. We hope to see you all there.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! I am looking forward to hearing about everyone's breaks when we go back to school on Tuesday. Just a quick reminder about Milestone #2 10 facts...

-The form for milestone #2 was sent home the day before break and is a sheet of blue paper. If you misplaced that paper- it is ok for your student to write out their 10 facts on paper from home.

-If Milestone #2 is turned in early on the Tuesday we come back from break, your student will receive a "Homework Pass" to use on a future assignment.

-Milestone #2 is due by Thursday, April 28th.

-Be sure to have your student write out all their facts, use correct capital letters and punctuation.

-Also, be sure the facts are in "kid-friendly" language so the student is able to read, understand, and remember their facts better.

Pajama Day

We had such a fun day today! This morning the students helped me push together the tables and lay out blankets and pillows around the room. Each student had a comfortable reading place for the day. We played a game of Word Wall Bingo, Skyped with some new friends in Massachusetts, had a cookie and milk snack, went on a pajama parade through the school, and watched a movie with the other first graders. School is always tons of fun when you are wearing PJ's!

Student Service Projects

Some fifth graders at our school are collecting items for service projects. If you are able to, the students are asking for donations for a Teddy Bear Drive and for a Book Drive. The items may new new or gently used. The items will be donated to children in local homeless shelters. They will be taking donations until May 7th. Thank you for your support of our older students!

More Shapes and Bird Feeders

In social studies we leaned about the 3 R's, reduce, reuse, and recycle. We "reused" the milk cartons from lunch to make bird feeders to hang in the back of our playground with kindergarten partners.

In math the students used straws and twist ties to make polygons. We learned that polygons are shapes with straight sides, no opening and with lines that do not cross.

Rules Podcast

Even the teacher has homework! In my grad class at Oakland, I've been learning about project based learning. In our class at UPA the students experienced learning about school and state rules through many hands on and explorative activities, that also meet state and district academic guidelines. To end off our project, some of the students helped me create a podcast sharing what we learned about rules in school. Enjoy!

Mr. Kefgen and Ms. Standard will be holding another Student/Parent Reading Workshop. All are welcome to attend and learn many of the tricks and skills we are teaching the students to use while reading.

Milestone #1 Resources is due. The students in our class received a form to fill out this previous Wednesday. Students know they need to write out the resources on the form.

Friday, April 15th

Pajama day for students who turn in a completed Milestone #1 on time. Students will receive a Pajama day ticket on Thursday verifying that I received their milestone and they are able to participate in the day. Students who can participate can also bring a favorite book, pillow or stuffed animal from home. In the morning we will have some special reading time and a cookies and milk snack. A note will be going home on Monday, April 11th with more information.

Match My Shape Pattern

Today is school we learned a new math game that the kids loved! Each student has the same number of shape blocks. One student creates a pattern behind a folder, then describes the pattern to their partner. The partner tries to recreate the pattern. After they check and see how close their patterns are! Report Cards/ Learning Team Plan

Last Friday, a large envelope went home in your student's folder. It contained their Narrative Report Card and the Learning Team Plan we decided on at their exhibition. Stapled to the front of the learning team plan was a note for the parent and student to sign saying that they read over their plan together. If it was turned in today, the student received a candy treat. I only received 5 signed notes today. Please go over the envelope tonight and return the signed note tomorrow.

Reading/ Writing Workshop

Every other Monday, Ms. Standard and Mr. Kefgen will be hosting parent & student workshops focused on different academic areas. This Monday, March 28th from 4:00- 5:00 they will be having a workshop about vowel sounds, and using different vowel sounds when reading and writing. All are welcome to attend! After you click on the above link, you will see a list of story books that are animated and read out loud for your student to watch and read along with. There are also games to go with many of the books. This website is great because with each book if gives a grade or age level for the story. Click the Green Button that says, "View Online" Next to the book you want to listen to and enjoy!

Just a tip- the web site only lets you read a few books at a time. To read more, just close the window, open a new one, and go back to the website.

Skype & Mystery Reader

Our class is very excited because tomorrow we are going to have morning meeting with Mr. Curran's class via Skype! Today we practiced sitting in front of the camera and took a few pictures so we could see what Mr. Curran's class will see when we video conference them. New Games Web Site

At my conference I learned about a great way to store all the games that are appropriate, fun, and at the level for our students in one place. Today I spent some time putting it together for you. I picked out games that go with our curriculum and that were kid tested in the classroom to be fun. It is organized by subject area. Save this website below so your student can play informational games on-line at home. They will have access to this page during classroom computer time also. Let me know what you think of it!

As you know I am currently attending conference to help integrate more technology into our classroom. I am learning so much and am excited to try many new ideas with our students. In the mean time while I'm gone, try one of the cool tools I just learned about and leave me a sticky note! Click on the gray bar that says "Mrs. Woolsey's Sticky Notes". Choose a sticky note and drag it to the bulletin board. Write a note and be sure to sign it!

A Great End to Our Exhibition Week!

I am so impressed by the presentations this week! Each student should feel very proud of what they accomplished. Thank you families for all the time and hard work you put into helping your child have a successful exhibition.

Next Friday, March 25th, Narrative Reports and completed Learning Team Plans will go home with your student.

Tomorrow & Friday, I will be out of the building attending the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) conference at Cobo. Ms. A, one of our best subs, will be in our class both days. I'm sure she'll have a good report for me Monday!

Detroit Fire Department

Today at school we had a visit from a Fire Fighter from the Detroit Fire Department. She told us about getting out of a house when we hear a fire alarm, not hiding, checking a door with the back of our hand and calling 911. The kids really enjoyed her visit.

Stop Bullying Now Campaign

Recently in the news I learned about The White House's Conference on Bullying Prevention. Although, the students in our class get along for the most part, it is good for you and your student to be aware of what bullying is and how to deal with it. In our class students use the DeBugging steps when another student is bothering them. The steps have proven to be very successful with helping students control their reactions, solve problems independently, and tattle less. We've also discussed that it is very serious if someone is hurting them or their property, and they need to let me know right away.

Milestone #4 Celebration

WOW! EVERY student in our class was responsible for their milestone #4 today! I was so proud of the students! (I even received 3 boards early!!!) The boards that were turned in look great! I am so excited too see all their exhibitions. I'm sure they will be very prepared!

To celebrate the whole class had a brownie treat this morning. At lunch, students who turned in a board ate with me in the classroom.

5th Grade Wax Museum

Today we visited the 3rd floor to see the 5th Grade Wax Museum. Each 5th grader learned about a historic African American. When we tapped their shoulder they came alive and told us all about their person. We learned a lot and think the 5th graders did a great job!

I will be attending a technology & education conference on March 17 & 18th. Because of this, our exhibitions will be held from Thursday, March 10th through Wednesday, March 16th.

100's Day Fun

We were so busy on our 100th day of school. Look at all the fun the students had!

First, students participated in 100 themed centers.

Javon, Gary, Jordan and Makayla are writing 100 words.

Matthew, Tristan, Tylor, and Jaden are making necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal.

Jada, Jamia, Jalen, and Jeremiah are playing the 100's Day Game.

Mekhi and Joseph are decorating flags for our parade.

After centers we had 100's Day Snack. Kids took 10 pieces from 10 different snacks to have a 100 snack treat.

At the end of the day we walked around the school in a parade to show off our special shirts.

We had such a fun day. Thank you to all the parents who sent in skittles and bowls, came in to help, and came to watch out parade!

Valentine's Day Fun

We had a very fun Valentine's Day! In the morning we worked hard to decorate frames for our Moms. (We hope you loved them!) In the afternoon we passed out cards, enjoyed a treat, played outside in the snow and watched A Charlie Brown Valentine.

We still need donations of skittles and bowls for out 100th Day Celebration on Friday. Thank you to those of you who already send in skittles.

Thursday is Milestone #3. I will meet with each student to go over their academic goals for their exhibition. If their goal involved writing a book report or letter to an author- please send in any rough draft of plans your student has begun that day.

Guided reading books will not come home this week. We've been too busy painting frames, shirts and going over milestones this week to meet with reading group. I sent home every student's word cards today so you can keep reviewing their words.

Shining Light

More Learning With Music

Today and yesterday we learned about the 2 sounds of the letters C and G through some fun songs. The kids really enjoy learning with music and I often ear them singing the songs through out the day!

Reminders

· Friday, February 11^th is our Sweetheart Dance from 5:30- 7:30. Formal attire is required. Tickets are $20.00 for 2 and each additional ticket is $8.00.

· Valentine’s Day is Monday, February 14^th. Students may bring in cards to pass out to their classmates. We will be making a special craft in class that day.

· We are asking for donations of skittles and paper bowls for our 100^th day of school celebration on Friday, February 18^th.

· We are decorating t-shirts with 100 fingerprints for our 100th Day Parade. Please send in a plain t-shirt that you are ok with us painting fingerprints on by Friday, February 11^th. If you do not have a shirt please send in $2.00 by Friday, February 11^th and I will provide a shirt for your student. The parade will be on the 100^th day of school, February 18^th at 3:00 and you are welcome to come watch it!

· Next week, I will meet with the student to go over Milestone # 3, Academic Goals. Please send in to school any evidence that you have been working on their goals at home. (For example: book report drafts, letter drafts, sight word rings)

· Mid-Winter Break will be the week of February 21^st-25^th.

· Milestone #4 complete visual aids will be due on March 3^rd. There will be no homework over break so that you can use that time to work with your child on their presentation.

Today in class students are writing their final copy of their recipe for our class cookbook. Each student will receive their own copy to keep and use in their own kitchen!

Over winter break our e-mail system had some troubles. It is fixed, but for some reason the e-mails I send to outside addresses are getting sent back to me or are delayed. Log Cabins

This is the last week for our current social studies unit and next week will begin 6 weeks of science. To end off the unit, we are learning about important Presidents all week long. Today we learned all about Abraham Lincoln and the important things he did as president. One thing we learned about was that he grew up in a log cabin. After we read all about him, we made our own log cabins out of frosting and pretzels.
