Writing Workshop

Writing is a very important part of our day in Kindergarten. As a group we discuss a topic we will write about and how we will put our ideas down on paper.
At their seats the students first draw a picture for their story. They are encouraged to think about what is going on in the story and what they have drawn. I ask them to say the some of the things they drew in their picture and write the letters for the sounds they hear. For example, if a student drew a story about a dog, they might write the letter D near the picture or on the lines provided.
Often when I ask students to write about their picture they tell me, "I don't know how to spell." I always tell them to try their very best. Also, I'll stretch out the word with them and ask what sounds they hear. Encourage your students at home to listen to the sounds of the words and add letters to their drawings. Before you know it, they will be writing words all on their own!

Centers

Centers is a favorite time of the day for our students. They are able to explore and learn on their own and with other students. Here are some pictures of our center choices.

At the library students can relax on the couch and read books.

At computers kids play games that reinforce reading and math concepts.

At the Math Center kids can practice their numbers, explore the shapes and play counting games.

Students work together at Puzzles to create a picture.

At the Writing Center students practice spelling and handwriting.

At the ABC Games center students play matching games with letters and the sounds they make.

At Dress Up, students use oral language skills as they play pretend.
At Big Books, students read the over sized story books.

Newsletters

I plan to send home newsletters about once a month. In the newsletters I will mostly recap what the students are learning in school. I will always send home reminder notes for important dates coming up. Also, I will update the blog with any new information.

If you want, you can subscribe to this blog. Each time I update you will receive the update in your email. Click the "Subscribe to Ms. Prawdzik's Kindergarten by E-mail" link to set it up.
